*June 9th 2012, a little after 2am*
“GOD DAMMIT!” Patrick Kane screamed, honking his horn over and over again with his left hand.
“Cussing isn’t going to help,” Paul Lloyd---better known as Justin Gabriel, said, in the passenger seat.
“Yeah, neither will you or these damn handcuffs,” Patrick gritted through his teeth, honking again.
Right now, Patrick Kane was stuck in Chicago traffic at Midnight, handcuffed to his ex-fiancee’s and baby momma’s new man, on the way to the hospital since his baby momma was now actually having the baby. This wasn’t exactly how most people picture the day their child is born, but it wasn’t supposed to be like this, exactly.
Yesterday, Patrick and Kat had gotten into a fight since her due date was quickly approaching and Patrick had yet to get the crib for their son done, and Kat ended up feeling bad, so she asked his friend and teammate Jonathan Toews to throw him a little party, his last party as a free man before his son came.
That party didn’t end up well.
Patrick ended up getting handcuffed to Paul with no key to get them out, and then Patrick had gotten a call from Kat’s friend Kristen saying she had gone into labor, and everyone headed to the hospital. That was two hours ago, Paul and Patrick still aren’t anywhere near the hospital.
“DAMMIT! This isn’t how this was supposed to happen!” Patrick yelled again, punching his steering wheel.
“How was it supposed to go?” Paul asked him.
“Not like this…none of this was supposed to happen,” Patrick said, trying to calm down to explain, “I was supposed to be with Kat, and we were supposed to have this kid…together, as a family, and now…everything’s just fucked up.”
“Yeah, well uh, I got news for you,” Paul began, “Life doesn’t always work out how people plan, but you know what, you still have a kid about to come any minute now, so get your shit together. You may have grown up around a good family with good parents and all, but Kat didn’t, and she won’t let you ruin your son’s life by being an asshole. Get it together.”
Patrick took a moment, and took in a deep breath as well. Like he said- this isn’t the ending he wanted to happen, but you gotta take what life gives you, and life was giving Patrick a son.
“Come on,” Patrick said, opening his car door.
“What?” Paul asked, as Patrick tried to get out, making the handcuffs tug.
“Come on,” He said, pulling Paul, harder this time, until both of them were out of the car.
“Where are we going?” Paul asked, as they were on the sidewalk by Chicago traffic at 2:49am.
“We’re going to the hospital.”
***
Patrick and Paul went running into Northwestern hospital and into an elevator that take them up to the labor and delivery wing of the hospital. They went past the room full of all the newborn babies, but ignored it, then went looking for the lobby.
“Alright, I just gotta figure out what room Kat’s in…” Patrick said.
“Um…I don’t think that’ll be too hard,” Paul said, pointing behind Patrick.
Patrick turned around, and he saw a waiting room full of people- People he knew, people Kat knew, their friends, every single one of them in there, just waiting. Patrick and Paul ran in and everyone in there immediately started talking to them about what was going on, but Kat’s good friend Kristen Brooks got them to shut up.
“Basically, Kat’s really close to being able to deliver, and she’s been REALLY pissed off since neither of you have been here…” Kristen began, but then noticed they were handcuffed, “And she’ll also be really confused…”
“It’s been a LONG night…” Both Paul and Patrick said.
“Hold on…” Patrick Sharp said, rising. His fiancee’, Sarah was sleeping and resting her head on his shoulder, but he gently moved it so he could get up.
He walked over to them and grabbed their wrists that were being held together by handcuffs, and took a key to unlock them.
“I found the key, so um…yeah,” He shrugged before sitting back down.
“Great,” Patrick said, “Now, where’s Kat?”
Kristen was about to open up her mouth to speak, but then a nurse ran past the waiting room, and she focused her attention on her, as well as did Patrick and everyone else in the room.
“Dr. Reese,” She said, running up to a doctor, “Your patient in room 309 is fully dilated and ready to deliever.”
Patrick’s head turned around to Kristen, who just smirked at him.
“Kat’s in Room 309.”
***
Patrick went running into Room 309, where he saw tons of doctors in there, as well as Kat, she looked sweaty and tired.
“Hey,” Was all Patrick said, as he went by Kat’s side. Kat turned her head a little to see Patrick.
“Oh my god….you’re finally here…” She said. Then, she smacked him. “Where the hell have you been!?”
“Well-”
“Miss Dawson, we’re ready to start pushing,” Dr. Reese said to her. Patrick lifted his arm up to her and opened his hand.
“Just grab it and push,” Was all he said. Kat did just that, and started pushing
After two counts of 10, a total of 20 seconds of pushing, Kat was completely out of breath.
“Alright, I can see the head,” Dr. Reese announced, “Kat, for the next ten seconds, I need you to push as hard as we can, and we’ll get that baby, you can do it.”
“Yeah, you can,” Patrick said to Kat. Kat took in another deep breath, then started pushing again.
Then, the room was filled with nothing but a baby's cry, and then, that baby was given to a nurse, who gave it a quick bath, then put a red blanket around him, and a red cap over his head, then handed him to Kat, his mom.
“Welcome to the world, Lucas James Kane,” Kat said, while holding him for a moment. Patrick couldn’t look at him, he was still grasping onto that he was now officially a father. He was now responsible for a growing, breathing little boy, his son. His partying days are over, he’s got another life to think about now.
“Patrick,” Kat said, pulling Patrick out of his thoughts. “Do you want to hold him?”
Patrick turned around and in front of him was his ex fiancee’ and baby momma, with their son in her hands, offering for him to hold him. Patrick nodded, then walked over and got his son in his hands, and that’s when everything changed.
Suddenly, he felt as if his life had meaning to it. Like everything bad that has ever happened to him, like everything good that’s happened to him, It just didn’t matter. Nothing could compare to this.
Patrick stared down at his son, before opening his mouth to speak.
“Hey, Lucas….I am your father.”
*October 25th, 2017, 8am*
Patrick put on a muscle tank, as well as shorts, his usual work-out gear. Today was a game day for the Chicago Blackhawks, and while he had morning skate at 10am, he still has time to kill, and it’s also a really beautiful day in Chicago, so he decided to do an old past-time favorite that’s he’s done over the summer with his now 5 year old son, Lucas. It was his week to have Lucas from Kat and Paul and their new daughter, Bianca, who was just two years old.
Patrick walked down the hall and peaked into Lucas’s room, and he looked asleep still. Patrick then knocked on the door, loud enough to wake Lucas up.
“Knock Knock,” Patrick said. Lucas rolled over to his side, facing Patrick.
“Who’s there…” The five year old said, groggly.
“It’s time to get up,” Patrick said with a smile. Then, Lucas rose a little.
“Hey, dad.”
“Yeah bud?”
“Knock Knock!”
“Who’s there?”
“Ya.”
“Ya who?”
Then, Lucas pulled his blanket off of him, to reveal he was wearing his dad’s #88 jersey he had gotten for his birthday, as well as shorts and sneakers.
“YAHOOOOO, IT’S BLACKHAWKS GAMEDAY!” Lucas shouted, with a huge smile on his face. Patrick smiled as well, and chuckled at his son.
Like his dad, Lucas loved hockey. Lucas wanted to be just like his dad when he grows up and play hockey too, he wants to play forward like his dad. Everything his dad did, Lucas wants to do, better. Since he was five though, Patrick and Kat don’t have the heart to break it to him that Patrick’s done some bad things in the past that Lucas shouldn’t really do. Lucas was still filled with so much innocence, and his parents wanted to keep it that way as long as they could.
“Alright, let’s go bud,” Patrick said, as Lucas jumped out of bed and followed him.
***
“Faster, dad, faster!” Lucas shouted.
Currently, Patrick was jogging, with a rope tied around his hips. Attached to that rope was a scooter, being rid by Lucas. The faster Patrick jogged, the faster Lucas went. Then, Patrick came to a complete stop, and Lucas was mad for a moment, until he realized why.
“That’s a big hill…really big,” Lucas said, looking at it.
“Yeah, It is, bud,” Patrick said, catching his breath as well.
“We can go home now…” Lucas said. Patrick looked at his five year old.
“What, you think your dad can’t run up that hill?” He asked him.
“I think you can do whatever you think you can do,” Lucas said.
“Get on that scooter and watch, son,” Patrick said, as Lucas got back on his scooter. Then, Patrick took off.
***
“You at least made it half-way up the hill,” Lucas said as he and Patrick walked back inside the house, both drinking gatorades, “well….a little close to half-way.”
“Eh…I’ll have better luck next time,” Patrick said as he took a big sip of his Gatorade, “Hey, your mom’s gonna be here any minute now, so how about you go make sure you gotta everything you need, okay? All your school supplies, everything.”
“Alright,” Lucas said, running over to the stairs and up them to his room.
After Lucas left, Patrick heard a knock on the door, and knew that it was that time again. It happened every week. She would come over here at this exact time once a week, either to drop Lucas off, or in this case, pick him up. Patrick sighed, then got up and answered the door.
“Hey, Kat,” He said before letting her in.
“Is Lucas ready?” She asked him.
“I sent him upstairs to grab all his stuff he needs a minute ago,” Patrick explained.
“He did any homework he got, right? I don’t want him doing anything tonight…it’s important,” Kat said.
“What’s happening tonight?” Patrick asked. Kat grew a little smile on her face.
“I found out I was pregnant, and Paul and I are telling him tonight,” She smiled.
“You’re pregnant again?” Patrick asked, a little shocked. Kat nodded her head, then Patrick smiled, “Congrats,” He said, extending his arms as he and Kat hugged.
“Congrats for what!?” Lucas asked as he ran over with his spiderman back-pack.
“You’ll find out later tonight,” Kat said to him as she and Patrick broke the hug. “Say good-bye to dad, we gotta get going.”
Lucas ran over and jumped onto Patrick, who caught him, and the two hugged. It felt good, but at the same time, It was sad. Lucas loved his dad, almost as much as Patrick loved him. It was hard to say goodbye after spending a week with each other, but then again, they were used to it.
“I’ll score a goal for you tonight,” Patrick told him.
“Promise?” Lucas asked, as Kat smiled while watching.
“I promise,” Patrick said, putting Lucas down. “Now, be good in school this week, no timeouts,” he told him, as Kat raised an eyebrow.
“Timeouts?” She asked, putting her hands on her hips. Lucas shrugged.
“I may have forgotten to mention everything that happened at school over the phone,” He said. Both Kat and Patrick shook their heads, but then giggled at their son.
“Come on, let’s go,” She said, as she opened the door to him. Lucas ran out the door, but then paused and turned around.
“I love you,” He said as he waved to his dad.
“I love you, too,” Patrick said, as he waved back. Lucas then ran over to Kat’s car, but Kat was still in Patrick’s house.
“You know,” She began. “you’re a really good father.”
“He’s a really good kid, he deserves a good father,” Patrick said. Kat smiled at him, before leaving. Once again, Patrick was all alone in his big house.
Lucas changed Patrick- for the better. Before Lucas, Patrick was a total party boy, ask anyone. After he met Kat, he tried to mature a little, but after Lucas was born, Patrick was a whole different person, a better person. Lucas changed Patrick, and Patrick will never go back to who he was before Lucas- ever.
